Market and Opportunity

Demand four times greater than supply

The Market

Uganda feeds the sub-region, and still cannot keep up

Food needs across the sub-region are intense: demand is estimated at four times the current supply. Uganda is a large food market in its own right, and it also feeds South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Rwanda and the eastern DR Congo.

Production remains below growing demand, and with unfavourable climatic challenges affecting rain-fed smallholder output, the coming years will be crucial for developing mechanised agriculture that can produce reliably at scale.

The Opportunity

Why Uganda leads the sub-region for agricultural investment

  • Four decades of stability. Uganda has been a very stable country for more than 40 years, with the best agricultural policy in the sub-region.
  • Investors are encouraged, and tax exempted. Any investor in agriculture is encouraged by Government, and the production and sale of agricultural products are currently exempt from taxes.
  • Abundant fertile land. Enormous surfaces of arable land can be leased from owners for many years, with state structures that support investors who need more.
  • Little effective competition. Rather than crowding, Government is making an incessant call to develop agriculture towards continental food security.
The Bigger Picture

Economic integration is creating common interests

The sub-region is organising itself into economic integration zones to jointly secure economic, social and political stability, with a vision of creating and protecting common interests. Agriculture sits at the centre of that vision: a continent that grows its own food is a continent in control of its future.

Imena Commodities is built to be one of the vehicles of that transformation, and we invite partners who want to be part of it.
